December 4th: I Am The Light of the World
Gazing Into the Light
by Jocelyn Marshall
“No one, when he has lit a lamp, puts it in a secret place or under a basket, but on a lampstand, that those who come in may see the light. The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore, when your eye is good, your whole body also is full of light. But when your eye is bad, your body also is full of darkness. Therefore, take heed that the light which is in you is not darkness.” Luke 11:33-35
I find this passage to be very interesting because the eye is the part of the body that we take in and perceive light with. When our eyes are opened, we can take in light and perceive shapes, colors, and life around us. We can understand in an instant what words could never fully describe. Have you ever been indoors with the lights off and shades drawn? Your eyes are accustomed to the dark and even though you might fumble around or bump into something at times, you feel comfortable. Then, if someone opens the shades and lets the bright sunlight in, it can be almost blinding. Suddenly the dust and dirt in the room are easy to see. The clutter is hard to ignore, and the need for clean-up is obvious.
There are many things in this world that can catch our attention with their glimmer of light. In the darkness, the gleam of what the world offers seems attractive and pleasing. Revelation 1:16b tells us what Jesus looks like: “His countenance was like the sun shining in its strength.” The shining light of Jesus causes any other light to fade away. It cannot compare to Him. Jesus is the Light of the World. He is the lamp, placed on the lampstand. Who can see this Light? All who enter in. When we open our eyes and see Jesus, when we behold Him, we let the Light into our whole body. We can instantly see the areas of our lives that need to be cleaned up. His light makes any darkness inside of us flee. Jesus came and revealed Himself, but some refused to see the Light. Those who refused to see were in darkness.
Verse 34 of today’s Scripture says, “Therefore, when your eye is good, your whole body also is full of light. But when your eye is bad, your body also is full of darkness. Therefore, take heed that the light which is in you is not darkness.” If we see darkness inside us, masquerading as light, we must open our eyes to see and be filled with the true light, with Jesus, Who is The Light.
