APOLOGETICS IN GRACE YOUTH MINISTRY

AUTHOR: JONATHAN SCHEFFRAHN

Doubt is something that all Christians will face at one point. Is God real? Is God good? Can the Bible be trusted? Is Jesus who He said He was? Am I an accident of nature or God’s workmanship created for a purpose? These are deep questions and one of the goals of the Grace Community Youth ministry is to help students respond to doubts with confidence in God and His word. We spent significant time at the beginning of this year helping students with those big questions through our January Armor Up classes and the February Reality conference.

In January Grace member Nate Kemp and Pastor Jonathan co-taught the Armor up classes on apologetics where we took the students on a two-week journey moving from atheism to theism to Christianity and finally to a disciple of Jesus. While faith was needed to make some of those jumps, as an example we showed that it takes more faith to be an atheist than a Christian. They loved the times where we played video clips of famous people like Bill Nye the Science Guy or the Pope and had to figure out if what they were saying corresponded to reality.

Then in February, we took students to the Reality Conference in Allen, TX. Along with four thousand other students they heard from the the best in Christian Apologetics today hosted by Stand to Reason ministries. They realized they didn’t have to be afraid of “hard” questions or skeptics because as we dig deeper we see that God’s truth corresponds to reality the absolute best. Here are a few testimonies from the students:

  • “I learned how to place my identity in God and rely on His Word!” - Alycia

  • “I was able to combat what the world is saying about the Bible and God’s love for us.” - Brooke

  • “It was so helpful to be able to defend Christianity’s point of view on various topics.” - Stephanie

  • “Before the conference I was slacking off when reading God’s word, but I’ve come to learn that His word is good and true and it is our pathway to what our purpose is in life. “ - Jeremy
